Program Description

Details

Portsmouth College Women’s Club presents an evening with Jeremy D'Entremont, supported by New Hampshire Humanities! This event will be hosted by Portsmouth Public Library on Zoom.

Everyone knows that there’s “something about lighthouses” that gives them broad appeal, but their vital role in our history and culture is little appreciated. Our early nation was built on maritime economy, and lighthouses were part of the system that made that possible. Due to automation, traditional lighthouse keeping is a way of life that has faded into the past. Jeremy D'Entremont tells the history of New England's historic and picturesque lighthouses primarily focusing on the colorful and dramatic stories of lighthouse keepers and their families.

Free and open to all. Registration is required.

Jeremy D'Entremont is the author of more than 20 books and hundreds of
articles on lighthouses and maritime history. He is the historian and
president of the American Lighthouse Foundation, founder of Friends of
Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses, and historian for the U.S. Lighthouse
Society. He has lectured and narrated cruises throughout New England,
and he hosts the U.S. Lighthouse Society's weekly podcast, "Light
Hearted."

The Portsmouth College Women’s Club was founded to promote closer fellowship among the college women of the Portsmouth area and to unite them in any educational endeavors, which they may wish to undertake, with special emphasis on scholarships. Contact the PCWC at pcwclub@gmail.com.
