The Search for Millie: The South Mill Pond Monster
June 6 – August 31

Do you love puzzles and escape rooms? Are you looking for an hour or two of free fun for the whole family or friends group? Are you into marine life, cryptozoology, and books? Have we got the challenge for you!

This summer, Portsmouth Public Library staff are on the hunt for evidence of Millie, the South Mill Pond monster. Long rumored and never confirmed, like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot, Millie is a local legend. We’re getting to the bottom of the mystery, with a series of social media posts throughout the summer. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook for regular updates, starting Monday June 6.

Now you can join in the search! Visit the library any time between June 6 and August 31 for two library scavenger hunts, where you can discover more about Millie. There’s something for all ages, and a small prize at the end! Just visit one of our public desks and say “I’m on the Search for Millie!”

Read on for more information, and while you’re here, don’t miss our Millie exhibit on the second floor!

Millie and Other Marine Life
Ages 2 – 7

Youth and families are invited to traverse the entire Youth Services department in search of marine life. Can you find Millie among all the sea creatures? How many can you spot?

The Search for Millie: Vanessa’s Story
Ages 8+, Tweens, Teens, and Adults

In our search for Millie, we’ve come across rumors of the disappearance of Dr. Vanessa L. Reyes, a marine biologist who went missing in 1967. And now it seems her diary’s resurfaced and been scattered around the library! What happened to Dr. Reyes? How long has Millie lived in the pond? What’s the most important thing we can do for our local marine life? Find out the answers to these questions and more on an epic hunt around the library. This challenge can be completed at any time throughout the summer, and is appropriate for families and groups.
