As The Sound of Music marks its 60th anniversary and the von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont celebrates 75 years in business, Portsmouth Public Library invites you to a special event featuring Kristina von Trapp, granddaughter of the real Maria von Trapp.
Join us as Kristina shares the remarkable history of her family: the true inspiration behind The Sound of Music. While the beloved film is based on Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, the von Trapps have long emphasized that The Sound of Music is not a documentary. Many dramatic liberties were taken in the film, especially in its portrayal of their father, Georg von Trapp, and the family's escape from Austria.
In reality, the von Trapp family toured the United States in the early 1940s as the Trapp Family Singers, eventually settling in Stowe, Vermont. There, they found a landscape reminiscent of their native Austria and established a farm that would grow into the von Trapp Family Lodge. Since the 1950s, the family has welcomed guests from around the world to the lodge. Today the lodge is owned and operated by Kristina von Trapp, her brother Sam, and her husband Walter Frame.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear firsthand stories from the family behind one of the most cherished musicals of all time.
