Tour the Portsmouth Athenaeum
with Tom Hardiman and Peggy Hodges

Calling all genealogists! Have you visited one of Portsmouth’s greatest institutions for local history and genealogy? If you haven’t, now is the time!

The Portsmouth Athenaeum is a treasure trove of genealogical resources. Their archive of over 150 collections includes the papers of Portsmouth’s notable citizens, records of institutions like the Daughters of the American Revolution, and materials from local churches, businesses, and historic houses. Their collection is over 200 years in the making, beginning when the Athenaeum was incorporated in 1817. Today, the Portsmouth Athenaeum serves as a non-profit membership library and museum, the last membership library left in New Hampshire, and has worked to expand public access to its collections, exhibits, and cultural programs.

Now is your chance to peek inside this historic institution! Athenaeum staff, including Keeper Tom Hardiman, will lead two tours on Thursday September 28, one at 1 PM and another at 2 PM. Attendees will have time to explore the research library and view the Athenaeum’s exhibit, “Peace, Love & Portsmouth: Celebrating the City’s Cultural Renaissance through the Lens of J. D. Lincoln.”

Registration is required and space is limited. Please only register for one session.

Participants will meet at the Portsmouth Athenaeum in the Shaw Research Library on the 3rd floor. The public entrance is shared with Ireland on the Square (6 Market Square). For elevator assistance, please call (603) 431-2538. Street parking is available in the surrounding area, or use the High-Hanover Garage or the Foundry Garage.
