This interactive presentation invites you to discover the world of past and present Portsmouth from the perspective of African and African American women. In spite of racial discrimination, hardships, and enslavement learn how these pioneers of change fought for justice and freedom, educated generations of children and even defied a sitting president. Hear their stories and celebrate their resilience, versatility, and courage as you discover our Seacoast Black Her/story.

About the Presenter
Valerie Contreras Fagin is a native New Yorker and an original member of the dance company, Ballet Hispanico of NY. She is a racial and social justice advocate, self-care fitness enthusiast, and facilitator. As a certified National Association Interpreter, Valerie has been honored to be a BHTNH Sankofa Scholar tour guide for the past seven years. She has been inspired by the work and mission of Valerie Cunningham (Founding Member of PBHT) that celebrates, honors, and brings to life the stories of African Americans for whom the Granite State is home.
